Why Join
The AAUP and our chapters represent faculty, graduate students, staff, and other academic professionals across the country. Here at UChicago, our chapter welcomes members of all these groups, though we recognize that many already enjoy other forms of representation. We aim to speak for both the particular interests of our members, predominantly tenure-stream and non-tenure-track faculty; and for the general interest of the university community as a whole, as we understand it.
Here at UChicago, our goals include the strengthening of shared governance, the reinvestment of resources in core academic areas, the defense of academic freedom, and the protection of our community against racism and injustice.
Nationwide, we are fighting for a fully funded system of higher education that serves students from all backgrounds, offers jobs with dignity, and enhances our democracy. The AAUP and our members have mobilized in the face of the Trump administration’s relentless attacks on higher education.
We are pursuing multiple lawsuits against the Trump administration to prevent federal cuts to lifesaving research, deportation of international scholars and students for ideological reasons, and direct attacks on specific universities.
We are standing together to protect academic freedom and shared governance.
We are promoting economic security for all academic workers.
We’re joining forces with unions and organizations across higher education to fight for a system of higher education that works for everyone—not just the wealthy few.
Join today by signing up with national AAUP.
